A private, independent and four year liberal arts women’s college located in Staunton, Virginia, Mary Baldwin College has over 2500 students enrolled. Founded in 1842 by Rufus William Bailey, a minister and teacher from Maine, as the Augusta Female Seminary, Mary Baldwin is one of the oldest institutions imparting higher education for women in United States. First charter to the seminary was granted by the Virginia General Assembly in 1845. First building of the campus was built during its initial years adjacent to the First Presbyterian Church of Staunton and in 1872 the land and building of the church were given to the school. Known as Waddell Chapel till its demolition in 1962 and had baptized Thomas Woodrow Wilson in 1857. Name of the institute was changed to Mary Baldwin in 1895 in recognition of the contribution of its Principal.
